The State of the Malaysian Environment and Its Outlook for the 1990s

SHAM SANI (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, shamsani@yahoo.com)

Abstract

The paper highlights some of the major features of the current environmental situation in Malaysia and their outlook for the 1990s. It is noted that while the present "mixedbag" situation is likely to continue into the 1990s, a great deal will also depend on the kind of commitments to be made by Governments (both Federal and State) and the different sections of the communities with respect to environmental conservation and sustainable development. Indeed, many activities affecting the environment in this country are within the purview of the State and Local Governments. Globally, the greenhouse effect, climate change and related issues are likely to receive greater attention in the 1990s.
