Kehidupan Rohingya di Malaysia: Perjuangan dalam Ketidakpastian Hidup (Everyday Life of the Rohingya in Malaysia: A Struggle in an Uncertain Life)

Abstract


Huge scale migrations of the Rohingyas which took place after the independence of Burma (Myanmar) is related to complex historical and political reasons. The continuing waves of migration have brought the Rohingyas to the Malaysia by the end of 1980s. This research focuses on the everyday life experiences of Rohingyas who have settled in Malaysia. The livelihood of the Rohingyas is a form of struggle within a social environment characterised by extreme uncertainty. The experiences of Rohingyas will be discussed accordingly under separate aspects: economic, health, education, document and safety. This research has also found the ‘ambiguous’ status of the Rohingyas has a serious implications on every aspect of their everyday life.

ABSTRAK

Migrasi kaum Rohingya secara besar-besaran yang berlaku selepas kemerdekaan Myanmar (Burma) dapat dikaitkan dengan faktor sejarah dan politiknya yang kompleks. Arus migrasi yang berterusan telah membawa Rohingya ke Malaysia sejak akhir tahun 1980-an. Kajian ini tertumpu kepada pengalaman kehidupan harian golongan Rohingya yang menetap di Malaysia. Hasil kajian mendapati kehidupan golongan Rohingya adalah satu bentuk perjuangan hidup walaupun persekitaran sosial yang dialami ini penuh dengan unsur-unsur ketidakpastian. Pengalaman kehidupan harian yang dilalui oleh golongan ini akan dibincangkan mengikut aspek-aspek berikut: ekonomi, kesihatan, pendidikan, dokumen dan keselamatan. Hasil kajian juga mendapati bahawa status sosial golongan Rohingya yang masih ‘kabur’ di Malaysia telah mendatangkan kesan yang mendalam terhadap setiap aspek kehidupan harian mereka.
