Abstract

Abstract: This paper compiles and collects a series of debates by scholars from the past to the present regarding the birthplace and early life of a prominent Sufi figure from the archipelago who is no stranger to the world, namely Hamzah Fansuri. The problem statement of this paper focuses on the lack of written information regarding his date and early life, causing scholars, especially Syed Naguib Al-Attas, Vladimir Josipovic Braginsky, Gerardus Willebrordus Joannes Drewes, L.F Brakel, Abdul Hadi Wiji Muthari and Alexander Wain, to strive to form a narrative of the early life of Hamzah Fansuri based on his wondrous works. Each verse of Hamzah Fansuri's poetry is researched and interpreted, accompanied by historical facts to provide an accurate picture of the early life history of this figure. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the thoroughness of scholars in researching and interpreting the works of Hamzah Fansuri. This study uses a qualitative method by analyzing the data findings descriptively. The study found that although each of these scholars researched and interpreted Hamzah Fansuri's works very well and carefully to find the truth, there is still no solid consensus among them to unravel the question of Hamzah Fansuri's life history. It is believed that this situation will continue if no new evidence regarding Hamzah Fansuri is found in the present or the future. All these scholars' scholarly contributions must be excavated and collected to ensure that the legacy of Hamzah Fansuri's masterpiece will endure.
