Abstract
Pendidikan vokasional adalah komponen penting dalam pembentukan sumber manusia di negara pesat membangunseperti Malaysia. Masalahnya pendidikan teknikal dan vokasional sering dianggap sebagai pendidikan kelas keduadan ini melemahkan minat terhadap bidang ini dan dengan itu merendahkan bilangan enrolmen pelatih . Kajian inimenerokai fenomena pembentukan kemahiran dalam kalangan pelatih Institiut Latihan Perindustrian. Denganmenggunakan kaedah kualitatif Grounded Theory data primer didapati dari soalselidik mendalam 32 responden yangterdiri daripada pentadbir, pengajar, pelatih, majikan, dan rakan pelatih di Institut Latihan Perindustrian KualaLumpur (ILPKL) yang telah dipilih secara pensampelan bertujuan. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa tekad danminat pelatih merupakan faktor utama dalam pembentukan pekerja berkemahiran tinggi. Pembentukan tekad inidipengaruhi oleh pelbagai faktor seperti dorongan keluarga, pengajar dan pentadbir. Implikasi dapatan kajian inimengukuhkan peranan tekad dan minat di dalam mentransformasi pendidikan teknikal dan vokasional di Malaysia.Katakunci: Grounded Theory, institut latihan industri, minat pelatih, pekerja berkemahiran, pendidikan teknikaldan vokasional, tekad pelatihVocational and technical education is a crucial human resource development (HRD) component in a fast developingcountry such as Malaysia. What is at issue is the fact that more often than not vocational and technical education isregarded as second class and this perception has deflated interest and training enrolment in the field. This study tooka closer look at the formation of skilled workers in a Malaysia’s industrial training institute. Utilising the qualitativemethod of the Grounded Theory primary data were gathered from questionnaire-based, in-depth interviews of 32respondents comprising administrators, trainers, trainees, employers and peers in Kuala Lumpur Industrial TrainingInstitute (ILPKL) who were purposefully sampled. The findings revealed that trainee interest and sense ofdetermination were critical factors in the formation of highly skilled workers. This sense of determination was inturn influenced by factors such as encouragement by family members, trainers and administrators. The implication isthat trainee interest and determination are imperative in the transformation of Malaysia’s technical and vocationaleducation.Keywords: Grounded Theory, technical and vocational education, industrial training institute, skilled workers,trainee interest, trainee sense of determination
