Abstract

This special theme focuses on issues and challenges surrounding women, liveability and empowerment in Sub-Sahara Africa, in line with the scope of this journal of extending coverage to as many areas and societies of the developing world as possible. The format adopted is deliberately standardized for all the eight Sub-Saharan countries featured. This is to facilitate country and society comparisons. The articles benefit from a research commissioned by the Non-Alligned Institute for the Empowerment of Women (NIEW), Ministry of Women, Family and Social Development, Government of Malaysia in 2009, and from an updating grant awarded by the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia DPP- 2014.
