Abstract

The Federation of Malaysia was formed on 16 September 1963 as a response to various domestic and regional threats. The idea of Malaysia originally included Malaya, Singapore, as well as the Borneo territories of Sabah, Sarawak, and Brunei. However, Brunei later decided not to be part of the scheme, due to its own political and economic reasons. In the case of Singapore, its potential risks to Malaya were mitigated through the inclusion of Sabah and Sarawak in the scheme. This essay discusses the factors leading to Singapore?s merger with and exit from Malaysia. It argues that Malaysia was established for the goal of creating ?political security? in the region.
