Abstract

This article discusses the Dutch and British attempts in the East Indies to resolve the struggle over determining the power and sphere of influence between the Dutch and British in the East Indies as a result of the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1814. The dispute between the Dutch and British after the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1814 intensified as British officials in the East Indies sought new settlements to compete with the revival of Dutch trade monopoly. To top it off, disputes arose as the British established their new settlement in Singapore in 1819. Attempts to resolve the dispute between the Dutch and the British were made but were unsuccessful. The dispute was finally resolved when the Dutch and the British agreed to sign the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyse the problems that arose in resolving the dispute between the Dutch and the British from 1814 to 1824. Among the subjects covered in this study are problems related to the right of control and sovereignty over the disputed area. This study applies qualitative methods based on historical research methodology by examining Dutch and British administrative documents, especially records made by Dutch colonial officials such as J.C. Baud and C.T. Elout. Relevant and authoritative secondary sources are also referred to, particularly the agreements and personal correspondence collected by P.H.V.D. Kemp and A.R. Falck. According to the study’s findings, the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1814 sparked problems and disputes between the Dutch and the British. Nevertheless, the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824 managed to resolve the power dispute over predominant influence and strengthen Dutch and British relations in the East Indies
