Abstract

Health disparities are evident between people with intellectual disability and the general population. Special Olympic Indonesia is a non-profit organization linked to Special Olympic Inc. that offers a unique opportunity for working with people with an intellectual disability. Therefore, the study has an objective to measure prevalence of dental caries and gingivitis among Indonesian athletes with intellectual disability. The total participants were 1452 athletes from 11 provinces (East Java, Bali, South of Sulawesi, North of Sumatera, East of Nusa Tenggara, Central of Kalimantan, DKI, West Java, Yogyakarta, West of Nusa Tenggara, Banten). This study was conducted between 2004 and 2009. The mean age of the athletes was 15.04 ± 4.618 years. 77.6% of participants who experienced pain in oral cavity have untreated decay. The highest untreated decay was recorded among athletes who lived in the island of Java (Yogyakarta 81.5%; West of Java 83.8%; DKI Jakarta 80.2%, and East of Java 83.5%) compared to athletes who lived outside Java Island. The prevalence of gingivitis was 29.47% among the athletes with intellectual disability. DKI Jakarta province had the highest prevalence of gingivitis (51.04%) compared to west of Nusa Tenggara province, which recorded the lowest prevalence (14.84%). Based on these findings, the prevalence of caries and gingivitis were high. Athletes who lived in Java Island showed the highest prevalence of untreated decay and gingivitis compared to athletes who lived outside Java Island.
