Abstract

Abstract
This study seeks to explore the role of green surau concept towards the establishment of a sustainable community in schools. A qualitative case study has been applied as a method of research in a school’s surau in the northern part of Peninsular Malaysia. Furthermore, document content analysis has been used as the main method of data collection. It was also supported by direct observation of the school’s surau environment by using observation checklist and field notes, as it can improve the trustworthiness of the data obtained from the documents. Subsequently, after completing all data collection and management processes, the process of analysing data involving the data from documents and observations was done by applying the content analysis approach proposed by Cohen (2011). The findings show that there are five themes of the green surau concept that promote the development of sustainable communities such as religious and spiritual, academic and intellectual, economic and entrepreneurship, networks and outside community as well as arts and recreation. There are three roles of the green surau concept in order to promote the school community that is environmentally friendly, such as a medium for the disseminating ethical values and moral principles, acting as social agents and developing soft skills. Hence, the implication of this study to the world has spurred to the agenda of sustainable development through the implementation of various greening activities organised by green surau. Whereas at the Malaysian level, stakeholders at both government and private organisations will have the opportunity to obtain significant information from the role of green surau by way of it serve as an inspiration for creative and innovative da’wah, in order to attract the members of the organisation or the local population towards environmental sustainability.
