Kesedaran, Kefahaman dan Nilai Sepunya Pelajar dan Guru: Sumbangan kepada Pendidikan Awam Langkawi Geopark (Awareness, Understanding and Shared Values among Students and Teachers: Contribution to Public)
Abstract
Public education plays an important role in empowering local community. In the case of Langkawi, educating school citizens could prepare them as agents of change with the capacity to participate and manage sustainable development. Participation and involvement of Langkawi population in geological, biological and traditional heritage conservation is crucial in order to ensure Langkawi maintains its geopark status. This article discusses findings on a study based on students’ and teachers’ conceptions on public education constructs. A research framework was designed to determine samples’ level of understanding and awareness in relations to shared values; role and responsibilities; benefits and opportunities. Data were collected using questionnaires administered on 292 students and 75 teachers in the first phase of study while 24 students and 12 teachers were interviewed in the second phase. Results show that levels of knowledge and awareness on Langkawi Geopark are moderately high among teachers and students involved. Majority of respondents claimed to have significant shared values on Langkawi as a whole. Teachers interviewed had related experiences of using sources found in Langkawi during teaching and learning processes. Sampels among students also claimed to have participated in geological sites exploration and also in planting mangroves to protect Langkawi beaches. It is concluded that public education involving school citizens on the island need to be planned and carried out on a bigger scale to increase their knowledge and awareness of Langkawi Geopark. As future custodians of the magical island students should have basic understanding and strong feelings for environmental conservation and sustainable development.
