Abstract

This study aims to test a model of the relationship between emotional intelligence, personality traits and leadership behaviours in the context of their impact on job performance. The model is based on the responses given by 306 educational leaders in 15 SBT (High Performance Schools) in Malaysia. The respondents were given four different sets of questions, each designed to measure: emotional intelligence, personality traits, leadership behaviour and work performance. The resultant model was tested using structural equation modelling. The test results showed that the model adhered to the following indice guidelines: TLI (Tucker-Lewis Index), NFI (Normed Fit Index), RFI (Relative Fit Index), IFI (Incremental Fit Index) and CFI (Comparative Fit Index) values are more than .90. . However, the results based on the RMSEA (Root Mean Square Error of Approximation), show the RMSEA was significant at 0.91 (RMSEA <.06), [X2 (N = 306, df = 59) = 209 186, p <.05]. The results also do not accord to Baseline Comparison indicators. This meant that the proposed model was not appropriate. Therefore pointer modification (M.I) was applied to improve the models compatibility with the data. After the modifications were carried out, the model could be applied to the gathered datasets. The final model allowed for an improved assessment of psychological constructs in school settings, which could in turn be used to assist in enhancing work performance.
