Creative Writing as a Method of Emotional Regulation and the Development of Spiritual Intelligence Among University Students

Abstract

From the perspective of developmental psychology, adolescents face various stages of conflict in choosing the best emotions in complex situations. The transition from childhood to adulthood is an extremely critical phase that significantly impacts their future. Therefore, this phase needs to be supported not only socially and intellectually, but more importantly, spiritually. This article explores the role of intellectual engagement through creative writing activities to help adolescents (university students) regulate their emotions, particularly through short story composition. The development of fictional characters responding to conflicts along the short story’s plot typically represents the process of self-regulation. Participation involves 64 students from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The study used the Emotional Intelligence Model by Goleman (1998) and Noriah et al. (2004) to form the survey. Seven dimensions of emotional and spiritual intelligence were examined: self-awareness, emotional regulation, self-motivation, empathy, social skills, spirituality, and maturity. It discovered that the emotional and spiritual intelligence of the students was at a high level, including their emotional regulation. Correlation analysis revealed a strong positive relationship between spiritual intelligence and emotional intelligence, as well as between spiritual intelligence and emotional regulation. This means that the students’ spiritual intelligence influenced their emotional regulation and emotional intelligence. The implication is that it is important to cultivate spiritual intelligence to produce students with good emotional intelligence. Interestingly, this also leads to the development of skills in creating characters, settings, plots, point of view, and stylistic that can channel positive emotions and reassess the conflicts developed in a short story’s narrative.
