Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to identify the levels of attitude and intention towards learning the Chinese language and to analyse the relationship between these two variables among rural Chinese students in national secondary schools in Serian, Sarawak. In this context, “Chinese” refers to Mandarin (also known as Huayu), which is taught as a subject in schools. The study employed a quantitative approach using a survey method, with questionnaires as the primary instrument for data collection. A total of 174 students were selected through simple random sampling as respondents. The data obtained were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Findings revealed that rural students had a generally positive attitude towards learning Chinese, with the cognitive component recording the highest mean score, followed by affective and behavioural components. The slightly lower score in the behavioural component reflects challenges students face in consistently using the language in formal settings, such as in the classroom. The overall level of intention to learn the Chinese language was also high, particularly in terms of intrinsic motivation and behavioural intent. Correlation analysis indicated a significant and strong relationship between attitude and intention (r = .714, p < .01), with the affective component showing the strongest correlation. These findings support the study’s hypothesis and reinforce the relevance of the Theory of Planned Behavior in explaining language learning intentions among rural students. The findings imply that the development of positive attitudes should be prioritised in the curriculum and instructional design to enhance students’ intentions to learn the Chinese language. This study provides empirical insights that could guide stakeholders in formulating educational strategies to maintain and conserve the Chinese language within Malaysia’s multilingual society.
