Abstract

The impacts of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events vary depending on the locations, thus resulting in conflicting findings within the fisheries sector. The objective of this study is to examine the El Niño phenomenon and its impact on chlorophyll concentration distributions in the waters of the West Coast of Sabah, particularly in Kota Kinabalu, and its influence on fish landings during the year 2015/2016. This study utilised remote sensing satellite data from MODIS acquisitions for the year 2012 to 2016 for mapping the chlorophyll content distributions. The study also incorporated fish landings data obtained from the Sabah State Fisheries Department and the Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) data. The findings of the study reveal a decrease in fish landings during the El Niño event that occurred in 2015/2016, which correlates with an increase in the ONI values, indicating a moderate to strong El Niño event. The study's results demonstrate that Niño events impacted both fish landing volumes and chlorophyll concentrations, affecting the livelihoods of fishermen and downstream industries related to fisheries, thus enhancing the understanding of ENSO events, particularly within the local fishing enterprises.
