This study aimed at identifying the teaching implementation of the Arabic-Malay writing education programme in the classrooms at Madrasah Ibtida’iyyah (MI), Kota Batam, Indonesia. The aspects studied were (1) the problems faced by the teachers of the Arabic-Malay writing education programme and (2) structured teaching observation of five teachers in the classroom. Data were collected using questionnaires distributed to 45 teachers of the Arabic-Malay writing education programme that covered 21 Madrasah Ibtida’iyyah (MI) in Kota Batam, Indonesia. Structured teaching observations were also conducted on five teachers with three observations carried out for each teacher. Data were analysed quantitatively using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions. Results showed that the problems faced by the teachers of the Arabic-Malay writing education programme were at the moderate level (mean = 2.82, s.d.=1.66) covering fourth aspects, namely knowledge aspect, readiness aspect, support aspect and skill aspect. Overall, observations on the five teachers gave results that were at the moderate level (mean = 2.99). The aspects observed were planning, implementation, set induction, approach, method, teaching techniques as well as evaluation, ending and overall evaluation. The findings of this study could explain the problems faced by the teachers of the Arabic-Malay writing education programme at the Madrasah Ibtida’iyyah (MI) Kota Batam, Indonesia and it is hoped that it would help them in finding solutions in relation to the problems that they face in implementing the teaching and learning of the subject in the classroom. Several recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of the Arabic-Malay writing education programme have been proposed, namely the teachers should improve the teaching and learning techniques and the teaching and learning standard in the classroom.
